Get the Google Translator app and download the Chinese language translation file to access it offline. I speak Mandarin, making it easy for me to travel around China. China is safe and relatively easy to travel around, but the language barrier can make some travelers feel isolated and unengaged.

I recommend staying in the narrow alleys of hutongs, which make for a more authentic experience. Just m from the Forbidden City, this modern budget hotel features slick furnishing at close proximity to all the attractions in town. Visiting the Great Wall of China was the experience I most looked forward to on my first trip to China. Mutianyu is also popular but slightly less crowded.
